Methodology
What we calculate, and how
How we produce distance and emissions for business travel (Scope 3 Category 6) and commuting (Category 7), which factors we use, and where the limits are.
Business travel — Category 6
- Each leg is calculated as distance × the emission factor for its mode. Cars and taxis count once per vehicle; trains, buses and flights count per passenger.
- Distance comes from the GPS record. Where GPS can't measure, such as on flights, the airport-to-airport distance on the ticket is used and marked as such.
- Planned and recorded values are reported separately, never combined. For emissions, legs without a record are not filled with planned values; the number of recorded legs is shown instead. For expense settlement, a short or missing record is calculated with the planned distance and labeled "Partial GPS" or "Planned distance".
- Transport is identified from speed, route and the locations of stations and stops (on Android, also the phone's activity recognition). Employees can confirm and correct it.
Commuting — Category 7
- Calculated from the home, workplace and mode the employee registered, and the working days: one-way distance × 2 × working days × mode factor.
- Public holidays, business-trip days, leave and remote-work days are excluded. Employees confirm at month end; months not confirmed are included in company totals, marked as unconfirmed.
- If the company enters its total headcount, the share of unregistered employees is extrapolated.
- These are calculated values, not daily measurements. Employees can measure their commute once to check the registered distance.
Emission factors
We use official factors where they exist, and otherwise a substitute estimate with its source and reason stated. The current factor table is v3.1.
| Category | Factor | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Cars (Korea) | KEA-certified fuel economy × national emission factor | Official |
| KTX | Korail published value (2024) | Official |
| ITX, Mugunghwa | Korail published values (2015, 2014) | Official |
| SRT, subway, bus, taxi (Korea) | Calculated from official Korean statistics | Substitute estimate |
| Domestic flights (Korea) | Published unit emission factor | Official |
| International flights and ferries | UK government (DESNZ) factors (2026) | Substitute estimate |
| Travel outside Korea | UK DESNZ · US EPA · Japan MLIT (other countries: substitute estimate) | Official / substitute estimate |

Substitute estimates
For modes and countries without an official factor, we use a substitute estimate with its source and reason stated. Reports show the substitute-estimate share separately.
Confidence grades
Each calculation item is graded: GPS record HIGH · planned route MEDIUM · spend-based LOW. The grades can be viewed item by item in the audit trail (Enterprise).
Limits
- The calculation method has not yet been third-party verified. Where verification is needed, a verification body verifies the customer's emissions report, and Wayple's records serve as supporting evidence.
- Transport identification can be wrong; employee confirmation corrects it.
- Flight legs are filled with the airport-to-airport distance from the ticket attached as an expense, not GPS. Without a ticket, the flight distance may not be fully captured in the recorded values.
- Commuting values are calculated, not measured daily.
- Modes with neither an official nor a substitute factor are not calculated and are shown as "No factor".
- Factors change when new data is published; trips already completed keep the values from that time.
